Pathways and EPQ

Extended Project Qualification (EPQ)

The EPQ is designed to give students an opportunity to explore any subject or personal interest outside of their A Level qualifications. The EPQ can be produced as a written report or an artefact.

Students have completed a written EPQ on a broad range of topics including:

  • The limitations of chemical horn infusions as a poaching deterrent in Southern Africa.
  • The Price of Football: Can it still be considered ‘the game of the working class’?
  • Students have also created artefacts such as an horror movie, and a series of paintings to reflect the changes in art movements in the 20th century.

Sixth Form Specialist Pathways

Rossett Sixth Form has bespoke specialist pathways to provide support and guidance to those students wishing to pursue a career in the most competitive fields. Each pathway is led by a dedicated member of staff who has in-depth knowledge of the university application process and has contacts in the relevant sector.

LAW

This specialist pathway helps students gain an understanding of the various career options and entry routes into this profession. Students will have the opportunity to apply for the 'Pathways to Law Programme' and national mentoring and support programmes. Rossett has an excellent relationship with Leeds University Law School and we are part of its 'Street Law Programme'; students also have the opportunity to visit the university and take part in experience days during 'pro bono week'.

EDUCATION

This pathway supports students who are exploring careers in the education sector at both primary and secondary level. The programme will develop students' knowledge of the current and changing educational landscape. It also helps students secure essential work experience and aims to develop the relevant skills required for the interview process. Students are also supported through the relevant professional skills tests in literacy and numeracy.

We currently offer pathways in Law, DMV (Dentistry, Medicine, Veterinary Medicine and allied health professions), Education and STEM (Science and Technology and Engineering and Maths). Further pathways will be developed depending on the requirements and demand from each new cohort of students.

DMV

This pathway supports students considering a career in Dentistry, Medicine or Veterinary Medicine as well as those applying for allied health professions. The programme focuses on securing relevant and appropriate work and volunteering experience, as well as developing the skills, knowledge and understanding required in the application process. Our DMV programme includes external speakers, past students and partnerships with local care providers. Support is also given to students in preparation for the UKCAT and BMAT tests which are entrance tests for medicine.

STEM (Science and Technology, Engineering and Maths)

Two pathways are offered within the STEM sector. Each is designed to support students in their preparation for university and apprenticeship applications and the interview process. Students are encouraged to access experience days and workshops at local universities and companies as well as engaging in debate and discussion around current developments. The programme includes regular talks by external speakers in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths.
