Curriculum Principles
Psychology at Rossett enables students to develop their knowledge of real-life human behaviours and societal phenomenon. Having a broad range of disciplines in the subject allows students to develop holistically and become a well- rounded individuals with breadth and depth of knowledge for them to understand the world around them.
This subject cultivates an appreciation of the skills and knowledge associated with scientific methodology. Through a variety of practical, mathematical and problem-solving skills, competence and confidence in the subject is fostered, promoting an interest and enthusiasm for Psychology which is necessary for further study and careers in this field.
Curriculum Features
At KS5, high expectation and teaching to the top is evident in Psychology here at Rossett. We aim to challenge our students and equip them with powerful knowledge through a rich knowledge-based curriculum which covers Social, Cognitive, Biological Psychology and Learning approaches, as well as Clinical and Criminological Psychology. Making links across the course is also essential and a wide range of activities allow for this to take place. This includes teacher lead session, group work, presentations using the oracy framework and independent research. Working in this manner allows students to understand the complexity of psychological issues and move away from simplistic answers and towards more developed discussions.
Students use their knowledge and evaluation skills to apply Psychology to real world examples and current affairs. The Psychology curriculum is based on the edexcel specification. Students must consider scenarios in the exam that are not on the specification and think in a more synoptic way, developing critical thinking. High level skills of evaluation and harnessed by looking at strengths and limitations of various psychological concepts and other discussion points such as compare and contrast throughout the course. Assessment in Psychology at Rossett is focused and relevant and is designed to deepen learning from the lessons.
Students opt for A Level Psychology alongside a wide range of subjects, but the natural links to elements of the Sociology course mean a number of students study these courses alongside each other. Close links to wider Social Studies curriculums of Business Studies and Economics and science subject are also beneficial to student’s understanding of Psychology.
