Curriculum Principles 

In Art we aim to offer all our students a rich, broad and balanced curriculum. We intend to give our students the knowledge, skills and understanding to ensure ‘Success for Everyone’ at every key stage.Practical skills will be underpinned by powerful knowledge, and a creative, diverse and inclusive approach to art history will help extend students’ understanding. Our students will analyse, create and evaluate and develop valuable and transferable skills. Resilience will be encouraged through challenge and deliberate practice. Reflection will be an integral part of the creative process and students will be able to apply their thinking skills to the powerful knowledge learnt. We aim to instil in our students a sense of responsibility for their equipment and materials, their own learning and above all their responsibility towards others. We seek to enrich their experiences by showing them that there are diverse approaches in Art, and that their own interpretation and opinions are valid. We want to give all our students the confidence to articulate themselves, express themselves creatively and understand the relationships between the art, craft and design of different people, times and places. Art is a process for developing imagination, empathy, self-discovery and self-expression and it plays a vital role in mental wellbeing. We seek to create a fun and supportive learning environment where taking creative risks is encouraged and all our students feel supported.


Curriculum Features  

All students arrive at Rossett School at different starting points in Art. The curriculum is focused around a foundation of knowledge, skills and understanding to enable students to appreciate, create and evaluate Art, Craft and Design. Key concepts and skills required by the end of Year 13 are connecting threads running through the KS3 and KS4 curriculum.   

We aim to raise expectations and standards from the very start and ensure that rich, powerful knowledge is being practically understood, and creatively interpreted. Throughout all key stages, students are provided with opportunities to explore art from different cultures and become more diverse young people which is vital in modern society.  

Students in Year 7, 8 and 9 will develop knowledge of key artists, art movements and cultures. They will gain a thorough understanding of the formal elements of line, tone, colour, shape, space, form and texture. Skills of analysing, designing and evaluating will be common to all schemes of learning so that students can build on these further as they progress through the curriculum.

Career Relevance and Life Beyond the Art Classroom  

The knowledge, skills and understanding acquired in Art help our students in the modern and professional world we live in. They will have gained confidence and the ability to think creatively. Our approach to art history will help students to understand diversity and appreciate the rich wealth of cultures in our society. Students gain skills needed to articulate and present ideas with confidence, which is important in most jobs. We believe that through our Art curriculum students will become more confident in themselves. Skills such as drawing, painting and making can give students the creative tools to deal with stress in a healthy way. Powerful knowledge gained through art history will help our students to make connections between different people, places and cultures. We intend to raise our students’ aspirations by showing them links to contemporary illustrators, architects and other creatives.
